FAQ

How does this work? What is the process?
We are available by phone or email for a free initial consultation. We want to gain a thorough understanding of your unique needs as a professional artist or musician, to determine how we can best help you. After you decide to be a client, we will provide you our exclusive Tax Expenses for Musicians and Artists worksheet. You provide us a completed expense sheet, plus copies of your documents such as 1099's and W2's. You can share files through a cloud link or by email.

Payment is made before your tax preparation. We will explain the fee and it can be deducted on future tax returns. We accept PayPal or Venmo or personal checks.

All services are provided remotely by phone and email and we are available by phone and text during daytime, evening and weekend hours as needed.

What is the cost for your services?
You will find the fees very affordable and competitive – and in most cases, our clients receive a bigger refund with the specialized, expert advice we provide. Typically, we can find tax savings that will far more than offset the cost of preparation. Of course, each person’s tax needs are unique, depending on your sources of income such as any additional freelance businesses or self-employment, sales of property, your types of expenses, which forms you need to file, and other factors.

How should I prepare for my taxes? What information or records do I need?
Please have ready:
  • 1099 tax forms
  • W-2 tax forms
  • 1095 healthcare tax forms
  • Records of total income for your freelance work, such as Venmo/PayPal records, checks received
  • Banks and credit card statements
  • Receipts
  • List of touring or travel locations and dates

What kinds of expenses can I deduct?
Musicians, artists, and other creative freelancers have unique self-employment and business expenses. This is where our specialized knowledge will really help you. We can advise you as to exactly what to deduct. For our clients, we email a complete, printable worksheet of all the potential expenses to track. To give you an idea, here is a partial list of some of those expenses - and you may be surprised to find out how many more you can deduct!
  • Music Downloads, CD’s, Mp3’s
  • Performance Clothing purchase and cleaning
  • Dues to professional organizations
  • Car Rental
  • Insurance of professional equipment
  • Business meals
  • Musical instruments and recording gear
  • Sheet music
  • Art supplies

How long does it take to prepare and file my taxes, and receive any refunds?
Preparation time depends on your individual situation, but the most important thing is to do the job thoroughly and accurately, and maximize all the deductions you are entitled to receive. Your taxes will be e-filed for you, and we will provide you with pdf files of the completed tax forms. We use the latest professional software to e-file your return quickly and efficiently. After that, refund processing is in the hands of the IRS. Typically, most refunds take a couple of weeks.

I'm just a struggling artist, not a wealthy celebrity. Do I really need a tax service?
Yes, absolutely! Our tax service will help, no matter your income level. The IRS says all self-employed people who receive 1099 forms must file a tax return, regardless of income.
And if you made more than $400 for the year, the government imposes a self-employment tax of 15.3% in addition to federal income taxes. We can help and advise you to maximize your deductions and keep more of the money you work so hard to earn as an artist.
